In the heart of environmental change, BUFADESO’s ASILI-B program emerged as a beacon of hope, transforming tree planting challenges into a harmonious success story.
Empowering farmers to establish nurseries faced obstacles—high seed costs and livestock threats—hindering planned targets. Undeterred by challenges, BUFADESO innovatively shifted to central nurseries, collaborating with skilled farmers George Makindi and Mashaka Charles. “With BUFADESO’s support, I can focus on nurturing trees. The central nursery model made a significant difference as many farmers are getting trees easily because they do not have expertise in sowing tree seeds,” expressed George Makindi, highlighting the transformative impact.
Under the agreement, the organization provided essential support—seeds, polythene tubes, and seedling management—every three months at Tshs 70,000 per 10,000 seedlings. This streamlined approach eased financial burdens and ensured a steady supply of quality seedlings.
In ASILI-B’s inaugural year (2023), central nurseries exceeded expectations, raising 70,000 seedlings, achieving over 80% of the planting target. “These trees symbolize hope and resilience, a testament to collective achievement. Raising this tree nursery, I have witnessed the spirit of farmers to plant trees as many are coming to get trees for planting in their areas,” reflected Mashaka Charles.
A beneficiary farmer shared, “I want my children to grow up surrounded by nature, understanding the importance of conservation. The central nursery makes this dream a reality,” emphasizing the initiative’s impact on future generations.
The next investment involves expanding agroforestry through the central nursery model, contributing to conservation and economic stability. BUFADESO’s shift exemplifies a strategic approach, cultivating partnerships, empowering farmers, and sowing the seeds of a greener future. As each seedling takes root, BUFADESO’s central nursery model not only plants trees but nurtures a sustainable legacy for generations to come.
