BUFADESO Integrated Seed Delivery Business Model

BUFADESO Integrated Seed Delivery Business Model

Empowering Smallholder Farmers with Quality Seeds (2022–2025)

The Bunda Farmers Development Society (BUFADESO) has developed an Integrated Seed Delivery Business Model to improve access to high-quality maize seeds for smallholder farmers in Bunda District, Tanzania.

This innovative model combines affordable seed access, farmer training, market linkages, and sustainable financing to increase agricultural productivity, farmer income, and long-term food security.

The Opportunity

Bunda District has enormous agricultural potential but farmers face major challenges that limit productivity.

About Bunda District

Bunda District is located in the Mara Region of Northern Tanzania and has several strategic advantages:

  • Close proximity to Kenya, the largest economy in East Africa

  • Borders the world-renowned Serengeti National Park

  • Access to Lake Victoria, the second-largest freshwater lake in the world

  • Favorable climate for agriculture, livestock, and fisheries

The district covers approximately 3,080 km², with the majority of the population depending on agriculture for their livelihoods.

Agriculture and Poverty

More than 81% of the population relies on:

  • Crop farming

  • Livestock keeping

  • Fisheries

However, poverty remains high, with over 67% of the population living below the basic needs poverty line.

The Challenge Facing Farmers

Maize is the main food and cash crop in Bunda District, yet production remains low due to:

  • Use of recycled seeds with poor yields

  • Limited access to improved agricultural inputs

  • Lack of extension services

  • Limited mechanization

Currently:

  • Average maize productivity is 0.24–0.45 tons per hectare using local seeds

  • With improved seeds, productivity increases to 0.8 tons per hectare or more

Despite this potential, less than 5% of farmers use certified improved seeds.

Many farmers must travel long distances to purchase seeds, making access difficult and expensive.

Our Solution: The Inclusive Seed Delivery Model

BUFADESO has developed a farmer-centered seed delivery system that ensures farmers receive:

  • The right seed

  • In the right quantity

  • At the right time

  • At the right price

  • With proper training and extension support

The model integrates both market-based solutions and social inclusion to ensure even the most vulnerable farmers can participate.

Our Value Proposition

BUFADESO provides smallholder farmers with high-quality maize seeds, extension services, and market linkages directly within their communities.

Through this approach, farmers can:

  • Increase maize productivity

  • Reduce production costs

  • Improve household income

  • Strengthen food security

Our Target Farmers

BUFADESO works with smallholder farmers across Bunda District who typically face low agricultural productivity due to limited resources.

Farmer Segments

1. Farmers Able to Purchase Seeds

These farmers:

  • Own 2–5 acres of land

  • Produce 400–500 kg of maize per acre

  • Understand the benefits of improved seeds

They represent 40% of the farmers working with BUFADESO and purchase seeds in cash.

2. Farmers with Limited Purchasing Power

These farmers include:

  • Small-scale farmers with less than 1 acre

  • Widows and female-headed households

  • Elderly farmers

They represent 60% of BUFADESO farmers.

To support them, BUFADESO provides seed loans, allowing them to plant crops and repay after harvest.

Example:

  • Farmers receive 8 kg of maize seeds (enough for 1 acre)

  • After harvest, they repay 100 kg of maize grain

This model ensures that no farmer is left behind.

How the Business Model Works

Seed Procurement

BUFADESO sources certified maize seeds from trusted companies:

  • SeedCo Tanzania

  • Meru Seeds

These companies are well known for producing high-yield hybrid maize varieties.

Seeds are purchased at wholesale prices and stored in local warehouses.

Farmer Training and Support

Before receiving seeds, farmers receive training on:

  • Best agronomic practices

  • Soil management

  • Pest and disease control

  • Proper spacing and planting techniques

Training is delivered through:

  • Community facilitators

  • Extension officers

  • Demonstration plots

Local Distribution System
